The newest Petrolicious video features a man who has owned this beautiful Gullwing for 29 years. Unlike most 300SL owners he not only drives it, he races it on the salt flats of Bonneville.

You can't take it with you.
Or leave it for the next generation, apparently.

This guy is awesome. Cars are meant to be driven.
Reminds me of when I saw this in Napa a couple of months ago (all of these except the American one belong to the same guy, who drives them a lot apparently).

Agreed. It makes me happy to see cars like that Gullwing and those you posted driven. The American one, is that the Conti in your name?

Maybe. :) It's parked in the back since it's in the worst condition (not bad condition, but worst of the 4).

Yeah, I'm of two minds about this and one is much stronger than the other. The smaller voice is going, "that's an interesting thing to do with a now $1million+ and eventually priceless touchstone in the history of automobiles." The much stronger voice is..."HE REALLY COULDN'T FIND SOMETHING BETTER SUITED FOR SALTFLAT RACES, SO HE RUINED ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND ICONIC CARS OF ALL TIME?!?" It's his money and he can do what he wants, but this feels like (on some level) a case of someone saying, through their actions, "I felt like destroying something beautiful." Here's hoping there's enough left worth to be salvaged by the next generation after he's done not "taking it with" him.
Sorry if this comes off harsh, but I have a soft spot for 300SL's.

It comes off a bit like, "I used Picasso's Guernica as a shower curtain; YOLO."
